Department of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Research (DMNCHR)
Building on the principles and success of Healthy Child Uganda (HCU), the Department of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Research (DMNCHR) has been formally established at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).
The department serves as a national and regional hub for community-based programs, research, and training in maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health across Uganda and East Africa.
Led by Dr. Hamson Kanyesigye, following in the footsteps of founder Prof. Jerome Kabakyenga, DMNCHR has launched a new strategic direction for 2024–2029 (link to Mission and Vision/strat document). Under this framework, Healthy Child Uganda continues as a flagship program. The establishment of DMNCHR strengthens the sustainability of HCU activities and partnerships while expanding opportunities for innovative, policy-relevant research, training, and implementation in priority health areas.
A formal partnership with the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) at the University of Calgary (Canada) further enhances collaboration, creating exciting opportunities for joint research, capacity building, and global health impact.
