Our Team

Healthy Child Uganda (HCU) is a partnership between Ugandan and Canadian universities with active participation by local Ugandan communities. The Ugandan partners are Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Mbarara and Bushenyi Health Districts; the Canadian partners are the University of Calgary, Dalhousie University, and the Canadian Paediatric Society.

A Ugandan team comprised of about 8 core staff members, which is based at MUST in Mbarara, leads and manages HCU field activities.  Included within this team are several community-based health care facilitators whose activities serve to link the university and project office with the rural health centres and Community Health Workers.

  • A Steering Committee oversees projects, major activities, and strategy. Representatives from MUST, District Health Service and local health centres sit on this committee.

  • Ugandan-Canadian technical teams advise on curriculum, program growth, research and health centres, training and infrastructure. The Canadian team also plays a big role in fundraising and designing program strategy.

  • The Ugandan Ministry of Health and Mbarara and Bushenyi Health Districts are partners, ensuring that HCU activities remain closely aligned with national and district priorities.

To date, more than 30 Canadians have donated a month or more of technical expertise, training, and mentoring with HCU in Uganda. Many Canadians continue to offer consultation from Canada throughout the year on curriculum design, research, and project management. HCU also teams up with local NGOs doing related or complementary work in Uganda. Our volunteers, partner organizations and generous donors have made us a success!
