Helping in Uganda and Canada

Africa has a nearly endless supply of unskilled labour. If you are looking to work or want to volunteer in Uganda, but are limited in your practical skills and knowledge, you might have to reconsider your options. Healthy Child Uganda (HCU) is a small project, and the majority of its small team of paid staff are Ugandan. The type of people who volunteer in Uganda with HCU are experts in their field (e.g. pediatricians, neonatologists, community health experts) or are completely self-funded.

If you do want to contribute to Healthy Child Uganda, there are many things you can do in Canada. Hosting a fundraiser to provide bed nets to a Ugandan village or to contribute to micro project activities is significant to the work that HCU does in Uganda.  HCU relies on private donations for many aspects of programming.  HCU would love to hear from you if have skills in publishing/media.  If you have funding for research in Canada or Uganda and are interested in child health in rural areas, contact HCU with your study proposal.

Working or Volunteering in Africa

For experienced professionals consider volunteering with organizations such as Volunteer Service Overseas (www.vsocan.org  or www.vso.org.uk) or Canadian Executive Service Organization (www.ceso-saco.com).

Recent CIDA intern working with the HCU project in Uganda

There are many sending organizations that have opportunities in Africa for recent graduates.  In addition each year CIDA sends hundreds of young Canadians overseas on 6-month paid internships.
